On Thursday morning, April 23, during the Dysart-Geneseo staff meeting over Google Meet, Principal Mark Albertsen announced to everyone that Sherry Parker, second grade teacher at DG Elementary, had been named one of 10 Gold Star Teachers by the R.J. McElroy Trust and KWWL-TV. Sherry now joins the ranks of more than 300 teachers who have received this prestigious recognition since 1989.
In late winter the R.J. McElroy Trust begins accepting nominations from students, parents and teachers. Literally, hundreds of nominations are received and culled through and the list pared down to 10 incredible teaching professionals. The winners are announced and a formal celebration takes place in May at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year’s ceremony is tentatively set for September. Dysart-Geneseo Elementary students and staff will also formally recognize Mrs. Parker when they return this fall.
In making the announcement, Principal Mark Albertsen stated, “Sherry goes above and beyond for our students. She builds a great rapport with her class and makes the little changes needed for them to have a successful day.”
