Performing Arts

Union Performing Arts have a long and varied history of excellence in all areas, offering choir, band, show choir, jazz band, marching band, pep band, yearly fall play, yearly spring musical, dance team, individual speech events, and large group speech events.

Union speech has won the “Critics Choice” award for the top performance in the state 3 times for musical theater and once for ensemble acting. Since 2000, 65 Union musicians, 18 individual speech and 38 large group speech events have been chosen as all-staters.

The large group music ensembles are consistent earners of Division I awards at state contests as well as earning academic awards from the state association. Union vocalists have yearly been asked to perform the national anthem at state finals in volleyball, football, basketball, soccer and speech.

Community outreach is important as the Union Carolers annually perform over 50-holiday gigs throughout the Cedar Valley, decked out in Dickensian outfits and the band performs at Veterans events, community parades and Memorial day services. Excellence is the standard with participation at the highest level.

Union Vocal Music has a long tradition of excellence in a well-established program that offers opportunities in large group choral work, small ensemble work, and solo voice instruction. Besides many individual opportunities such as the Iowa All-State process, there are three larger group ensembles in the program.

Union Concert Choir

  • Open to all students regardless of ability and performs 4 concerts a year as well as participating annually in the State Large Group Contest.

Union Station Show Choir

  • Auditioned extra-curricular ensemble that gives students an opportunity to explore the world of pop/acapella singing.

Union Carolers

  • A very select 16-voice community outreach ensemble. Decked out in Dickensian outfits, they perform a 20-minute Christmas program to about 50 different bookings between Thanksgiving and Christmas annually throughout Eastern Iowa.

Musical

  • The vocal department also produces a full scale musical annually which is part of the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards program which brings in professionals to advise and critic all aspects of the performance.
