Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past – and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.
This show is filled with American Bluegrass music complimented throughout the show with fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Your toes will be tapping throughout the entire evening. All of the music was written by the unlikely team of famous comedian/avid Bluegrass fan Steve Martin and Edie Brickell from the 1980’s Indie Band “The New Bohemians”. The show ran on Broadway in 2016 and will touch the hearts of all who experience this deep and touching story.
For Union, a show of this depth is a departure from the rousing, over the top vibrant shows of the last couple seasons. “Bright Star” is filled with sweeping tunes of longing, loss, redemption and reunion. The audience will go on an emotional journey that ends with such joy and happiness that it will stick with them for years. When asked why this choice was made, Co-Director, Tim Mitchell replied, “We wanted to find something to challenge the young talented actors in the Union program. They don’t get the opportunity to really approach deep emotional acting and themes anywhere currently in the district and we felt this would be an amazing experience for growth for our students. The music is so incredibly written and the emotion throughout this production is something that we are so excited to share with an audience.”
