Union High School has had an exchange program with a German school for over 20 years. It originated with the exchange with the Karolina Burger Realschule in Ludwigshafen and continues now with the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium in Lauterbach, Hessen. Every two years a group of UHS students travels to Germany, staying with host families, attending school while experiencing the culture and everyday life of students in a German school. Many field trips and travel to cities like Munich, Salzburg and Berlin round out the experience. On alternate years the students from the German school visit their counterparts at UHS.
This year, 17 students will depart from the US on June 14, 2020 and return on July 7th. While living in the Lauterbach area with their host families, they might make side trips to the Rhein river, view local attractions, meet extended family, visit cities like Heidelberg, Fulda, and Cologne and explore a few castles. Later they will travel to Berlin, Salzburg and Munich. Highlights include the Berlin Parliament, Museum Island, the Berlin Cathedral, the Hohensalzburg Castle, the Olympic grounds, Dachau Concentration Camp, the Bayern Munich soccer stadium and many more unforgettable sites.
