Several Union Middle School Band members participated in the NEIBA Solo Ensemble Contest on March 7th, 2019. The contest was a great success. Red ribbons and “Excellent” ratings were awarded to 6th graders Matthew Hickok on bass clarinet, Erica Hoppe on flute, and Kelsey Brown on French horn. Blue ribbons and “Superior” ratings were awarded to 6th graders Kalen Nosko on alto saxophone, and Harrison Bistline on trumpet. Red ribbons and “Excellent” ratings were awarded to 7th graders Hunter Schaefer on clarinet and Landen Reed on tuba. Blue ribbons and “Superior” ratings were awarded to 7th graders Lauren Youngblut on alto saxophone, Clara Carlson on clarinet, Alexis Dugan on flute, Brooke Johnston on flute, Hayden Spore on French horn, Adam Brehm on mallets, Andrew Kline on trombone, and Sydney Anton on trumpet. Blue ribbons and “Superior” ratings were awarded to 8th graders Tobias Hopkins on baritone and Amy Caughron on clarinet. Two performances were chosen for the “Highly Superior” rating and awarded gold ribbons. This honor was earned by 8th grader Miya Uchiyama-Hansen for her flute solo entitled Serenade by Joseph Haydn arranged by Himie Voxman and 8th grader Joseph Bistline for his mallet solo Mexican Variation Mvt. 1 by George Frock and snare drum solo entitled The General by Guy Gauthreaux. Bill Livingston judged the contest and Mary Aschenbrenner was the contest piano accompanist.
